Castro Candaz (Raul Perez & Rodrigo Mendez) Ribeira Sacra 2021

Spain, Galicia, Ribeira Sacra
Approximately 90% with Bastardo, Merenzao and Caíño Tinto

Produced by Raúl Pérez and Rodrigo Méndez, Castro Candaz reflects the distinctive character of Ribeira Sacra, one of Spain’s most dramatic and historically significant winegrowing regions.

The vineyards of Ribeira Sacra cling to hillsides overlooking carved valleys of the Miño slopes. Ancient stone terraces support 30 year ol vines planted on thin, rocky soils dominated by slate and granite, where roots penetrate the bedrock for water and nutrients. The rugged landscape, where using machinary is often impossible, has earned Ribeira Sacra a reputation for heroic viticulture.

The grapes are harvested by hand into small boxes, an essential practice in this challenging terrain. Careful handling helps preserve the integrity of the fruit before fermentation. The wine subsequently spends 12 months in used French oak barrels, allowing the tannins to soften and integrate while contributing subtle texture and complexity without imposing pronounced oak flavors.

Revisited a year later, the 2021 offers generous aromas of pomegranate and ripe cherry, accompanied by a delicate herbal note. The palate is juicy yet compact, with concentrated red fruit, refreshing acidity, and soft but pleasantly grippy tannins.

The influence of barrel maturation is evident in the wine’s rounded texture and increasingly integrated structure rather than overt notes of wood or spice. A straightforward, savory finish provides a pleasing contrast to the generous fruit.

An appealing expression of Ribeira Sacra, balancing vibrant fruit, gentle maturity, and the understated influence of traditional cellar practices.
