Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazeulo and Graciano
Few producers embody the traditions of Rioja quite like R. López de Heredia, a family estate founded in Haro in 1877. If there is one producer in Rioja that remains steadfast in its embrace of the past, this is certainly among the finest examples.
Viña Bosconia comes from the historic El Bosque vineyard, a 15 hectare property situated along the Ebro River on the southern foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. Planted on clay and limestone soils at approximately 465 meters, the vineyard is home to Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano, with vines averaging 40 years of age.
What distinguishes Bosconia is the estate’s extraordinary patience in the cellar. The Reserva spends approximately five years aging in American oak barrels, undergoing traditional rackings by hand. The wine is bottled without filtration, and allowed to mature further in bottle before release. This extended aging allows the fruit, acidity, tannins, and savory elements to develop naturally, creating wines of remarkable balance and longevity.
I decanted the bottle before pouring, revealing a beautiful garnet red color in the glass. The nose was immediately inviting, with aromas of sour cherry, cedar, fresh herbs, and dried flowers, offering a wonderful combination of fruit and mature complexity.
On the palate, the wine is dry and medium bodied, with a silky texture and lively, responsive tannins that provide structure without overwhelming the fruit. There is an understated elegance here as the wine opens. The balance between bright cherry fruit, savory herbs, and the gentle influence of oak is particularly appealing.
What I find most compelling is the wine’s texture and restraint. Nothing feels excessive or forced. The fruit, acidity, and tannins work together beautifully, creating a harmonious expression of this outstanding vintage.
Viña Bosconia is a wonderful reminder that patience, tradition, and respect for the vineyard can produce wines of extraordinary character and enduring elegance.
