Sophie Schaal Alsace Gentil 2025

France, Alsace, Hunawihr
Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer
Organically Farmed, A.O.C. Alsace

Sophie Schaal works with organically farmed vineyards around Hunawihr in the heart of Alsace. The vineyards are planted on the region’s characteristic clay and limestone soils, which provide good drainage while retaining sufficient moisture for the vines. Her approach emphasizes careful farming and minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the individual varieties and character of the vineyards to remain at the forefront.

This Gentil is a blend of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer. During vinification, the Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer undergo a period of skin maceration before pressing, adding aromatic complexity, texture, and structure to the finished wine.

Described as an “orange” wine, I was curious to see how the skin contact would present itself. In the glass, the wine shows a very clean golden yellow color with a subtle orange hue. It is clear and bright, with the deeper color reflecting the partial maceration before pressing.

The nose is expressive and fresh, with aromas of ripe yellow fruit and white flowers, complemented by a light touch of spice and hints of dried fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced from the first taste, with a rich, full, mouth filling texture while maintaining plenty of freshness. Ripe pear, pink grapefruit, peach and a touch of citrus carry through the palate, leading to a long, clean, and refreshing finish.
