Bodegas Breca Garnacha Breca 2020

Bodegas Breca focuses on expressing the true character of old-vine Garnacha from Spain’s Calatayud region. The vineyards, situated at elevations between 850 and 1,000 meters, are planted with ungrafted vines ranging from 60 to over 100 years old. These low-yielding vines, rooted in decomposed slate and quartz soils, produce grapes of remarkable intensity and natural balance. The winery practices minimal intervention, hand-harvesting the fruit and fermenting it in small stainless steel tanks to preserve purity. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, which add texture and depth without overshadowing the fruit. The result is a wine style that combines the richness of old-vine Garnacha with freshness and precision, reflecting its high-altitude terroir.

Bodegas Breca was founded by Jorge Ordóñez in 2010 with the mission of producing the finest Garnacha in Aragón. The winery also crafts two related labels: Bodegas Breca Garnacha de Fuego and Bodegas Breca Brega, representing a progression in quality and style. The range spans from the approachable Garnacha de Fuego at approximately $15.00, to the mid-tier Bodegas Breca Garnacha at $18, and the flagship Brega at $40. This bottle, from the mid-tier range, certainly delivers.

With five years of bottle age, the wine remains fresh and vibrant, offering jammy red and black fruit balanced by notes of cedar and spice. The bouquet shows black raspberries, licorice, and a touch of peppery herbs. Medium-bodied and concentrated, it presents firm tannins and an excellent, lingering finish — a rich yet balanced expression that’s both satisfying and easy to enjoy.

$18.
