2021 Joan D’Anguera Montsant Altaroses
Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Monsant
100% Garnacha Negra
The 2021 Joan D’Anguera Altaroses is a delight from the first pour, unexpectedly light in color, yet full of character and depth. The nose opens with fresh anise and vibrant red fruit, including cranberry, redcurrant, and cherry, layered with spicy black pepper and a hint of forest floor. Despite its 14.5% ABV, the alcohol is seamlessly integrated, allowing the wine’s medium acidity, grippy tannins, and pleasing body to shine. The finish is clean and lasting, and the wine as a whole is light, ethereal, and incredibly drinkable—a fantastic expression of Grenache that shows restraint without sacrificing oomph.
The story behind Altaroses is just as compelling as the wine itself. The D’Anguera family has farmed the same vineyard in Montsant since 1820, making them true stewards of the land. With seven generations of winemaking tradition, Joan and Josep D’Anguera carry forward a legacy of innovation. Their father was a pioneering force—the first to plant Syrah in the region—but the brothers took a bold new direction. Inspired by the elegance of the Côtes du Rhône, they began pulling out Syrah vines and grafting Grenache, embracing a style that emphasizes delicacy, femininity, and floral lift, while still maintaining structure and depth. With biodynamic farming at the core of their practice, the D’Anguera brothers are redefining what Montsant can be—honest, expressive, and alive.
