Antico Broilo Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2024
Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia
100% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso takes its name from the reddish stalk that connects the grape to its bunch. This indigenous northern Italian variety belongs to the broader Refosco family and is distinguished by the vivid red color its grape stalks develop as the fruit ripens.
Antico Broilo grows these grapes organically on 50 year old vines in Prepotto, in the eastern hills of Friuli Venezia Giulia, just a few miles from the Slovenian border. Rolling hills and steep slopes shape the landscape. The predominantly calcareous red clay soils are relatively lean, while the hillside terrain provides drainage and favorable exposure.
In the glass, the wine is a deep, almost opaque red with a beautiful, bright red rim. Aromas of blackberry and currant mingle with delicate floral notes.
Moreover, the palate has a generous body and impressive fruit concentration, balanced by acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Firm, ripe tannins provide structure, while the fruit carries through to a savory, saline finish that expresses its terroir. Aging in French barriques complements the wine’s depth and character.
A compelling wine of depth and character, offering considerable pleasure now and the promise of further development with age.
