Baron de Ley Reserva, Rioja 2014 Magnum
I wasn’t familiar with this producer initially, but what caught my attention was the combination of price and bottle size. Who doesn’t love a Magnum? It’s perfect for a dinner party, as why open two bottles when one is easier?
Baron de Ley is a relatively new producer, established in 1985, boasting an expansive vineyard spanning almost 1500 acres in Rioja. Their winery is situated within a 16th-century monastery, adding a touch of historical charm. Notably, they have been granted the prestigious DOCa† designation.
This red wine showcases abundant blue fruit, accompanied by hints of dark chocolate and a subtle saltiness. It exhibits the traditional characteristics of Rioja, with smoky notes complementing flavors of black cherry and licorice. The wine is firm yet smooth, offering a clean and bright profile. It displays a medium body and a beautiful ruby red color.
Tempranillo, Graciano, Maturana, $34. Magnum
