Qupe Marsanne 2009

Santa Ynez Valley, CA
85% Marsanne, 15% Roussanne

Marsanne and Roussanne are native to the Rhone region in France. They are traditionally used to make Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph.

The name “qupé” was chosen to honor the Chumash, the indigenous people of the Golden State’s Central Coast and Channel Islands. In Chumash, “qupé” refers to the poppy, a flowering plant traditionally used for food and medicine. In 1903 the California poppy was officially designated the state flower, and every spring masses of the bright orange blossoms still blanket local hills and back country.

This 15 year old wine from Qupe, Santa Ynez Valley CA has held up well, rich gold in color like a Chardonnay. Due to its age it has complex nose a little nuttiness, jasmine and peach. Citrus on the palate, with a flintiness. A generous mouthfeel with good acidity to carry it through. The palate is rich and complex, and lively with a lengthy zesty finish.
