Bodegas Breca – Brega 2018
Elegance and finesse are words commonly associated with high-end, expensive French wines such as those from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, and the overly priced Napa Cabernet Sauvignons like Heitz, Stags Leap, and Opus 1. However, in this case, I’m referring to Spanish wine. Spain has been producing incredibly elegant and nuanced wines, utilizing heirloom, native grapes from 100-year-old vines and exceptionally talented winemakers.
Brega is an artisanal wine crafted from the original Garnacha (Tinta de Aragón) grape, which was first cultivated in Aragón in the 7th century and later spread around the Mediterranean by the Kingdom of Aragón. Calatayud, located at Spain’s highest altitude, holds the designation of origin (DO) for Garnacha. This elevation leads to significant diurnal temperature shifts, sometimes up to 50°F, during the growing season. The combination of altitude and the region’s slate soils imparts a unique freshness and minerality to the red fruit profile of Garnacha.
This wine exhibits a bright purple color with powerful red fruit aromas, accompanied by hints of incense, oak spice, and licorice. Smoky and floral nuances further enhance its complexity. The palate reveals rich, full fruit flavors, concentrated lavender notes, and a touch of chocolate. The wine showcases excellent clarity and solid red fruit character, complemented by fine tannins and a subtle hint of white pepper. It is a wine meant to be shared with family and friends, perfect for a special occasion. 100% Garnacha, 16%, $49.
