Ciro Picariello Irpinia Fiano 2021

Campania, Italy
100% Fiano
Organic

Ciro practices a very low-intervention approach to grape growing and winemaking: organic viticulture, spontaneous fermentation, minimal use of SO2, and no fining or filtration. This method is considered “natural” and can be risky for white wines, obviously the winemaker knows what he is doing.

Picariello’s Irpinia Fiano is a declassified version* of Fiano di Avellino, made from estate-grown fruit. Some of my favorite Italian white wines come from Campania. They may not be overly complex, but they’re beautifully balanced with just the right touch of minerality. This base-level Fiano is ideal for easy drinking right away. It offers light notes of pear, melon, and tropical fruit, followed by a hint of floral violet and finishes with a touch of salinity that ties it all together. A delicious wine at a reasonable price!

*In the case of Picariello’s Irpinia Fiano, calling it a “declassified version” means it’s made from grapes that could qualify as Fiano di Avellino (a prestigious DOCG wine), but the wine has been labeled as “Irpinia Fiano” (a less stringent designation) instead.
