A few months back we were at an event tasting a number of different wines from various countries and regions. We came away with a handful of new bottles. One of which was the Ladeiras do Xil Godello . I didn’t get a chance to look at the label but once in my possession I saw that the maker was Telmo Rodriguez.
For those of you not familiar with this wine maker…in summary I see him as the Picasso of Spanish wine. He is one of Spain’s pioneer winemakers, advocating native grape varietals tied to the climates and conditions of their sites. He and his partner Pablo Eguzkiza are making world-class wines from undiscovered as well as known regions. He makes rare and limited wines of astonishing character and quality. His everyday wines have been equally praised, and widely regarded for the quality/value they offer. This is one of them.
So tonight, after a long week I decided to refresh my memory of this wine. It did not disappoint…in fact I was more impressed today than a few months ago.
Ladeiras do Xil Godello Gaba do Xil – Telmo Rodríguez 2021. Godello is a rare white variety with great potential, grown in Galicia northwestern Spain. Fresh pear and vanilla nose, soft supple mouthfeel, green apples and spice, mouth-watering briny grapefruit and good acidity. A bargain at $25.
