What is Edelzwicker?

Union Sacré, Edelzwicker 2022

For those of you that have never heard of Edelzwicker, it is a term used to describe a type of wine, specifically a blended white wine, originating from the Alsace region in France. The word “Edelzwicker” is of German origin and translates to “noble blend” or “fine blend.”

In Alsace, where both German and French influences are prominent, Edelzwicker wines are made by blending various grape varieties grown in the region. The blend typically consists of several different white grape varieties, such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Sylvaner, among others.

Edelzwicker wines are known for their aromatic qualities and versatility. They can exhibit a range of flavors and aromas, depending on the specific grape varieties used in the blend. These wines often have a crisp and refreshing character, with fruity and floral notes.

It’s worth noting that while Edelzwicker is a recognized term in the Alsace region, it is not as commonly found outside of that area. So when I heard that this wine was being made in CA, was orange. unfiltered and organic, I had to jump in. The final verdict…impressive!

A fantastic summer wine. If you liked the Spanish Gulp/Hablo recommendation, then this will certainly be your new go-to refresher.

With a gorgeous pear and floral nose, the wine exhibits beautiful freshness on the palate, courtesy of the Pinot Gris and Riesling. Notes of tangerines, pear, and lilies further enhance its delightful character. Overall, it is a highly enjoyable wine. 12.2% Alcohol, 240 cases made.
