Remember the name Bobal, a red grape variety that is native to the Utiel-Requena region in Valencia, Spain, which is located on the southeastern Mediterranean coast, is the second most commonly grown grape in Spain.
Atance Bobal 2019 is a wine that is 100% Bobal and is produced by Toni Sarrion, the winemaker of Bodegas Mustiguillo. He has taken it upon himself to champion this indigenous variety and elevate it from being obscure and rustic to being a leading grape for producing truly world-class wines. I have some of his Finca Terrerazo single estate wine, which I will discuss when it is ready to be enjoyed.
The aroma of this wine exhibits rich notes of spice, cherry, and dark berries. On the palate, it is smooth and features fresh blackberry flavors. The wine has a lengthy and supple finish with some tannins. It is drinking exceptionally well at the moment. $15.
PS. I understand that 2020 is just as good if not better.

Robert Flower recommended this wine for my wife’s 69th birthday and it couldn’t have been better. It paired brilliantly with the seared duck confit. I intend to buy a case this weekend. This man has an incredible palate and knows his wines.
