The label on this bottle turned my head, I had to try it and see if the playfulness matched what was inside. I was not let down.
Albert Canela and Mariona Vendrell embarked on their winemaking journey in 2011, when they were just twenty years old. Their venture is located in the hills of Conca de Barberà, southwest of Barcelona in Catalonia. With support from the local region, this couple practices organic farming and has established connections with traditional growers from whom they purchase their grapes. Catalonia’s wine heritage has long been associated with Cava and inexpensive rosé.
Albert and Mariona are among the new generation of winegrowers who possess a deep respect for their environment and a passion for indigenous grape varieties. They have chosen a different path, focusing on the Trepat, Parellada, and Ull de Llebre grapes that have sustained the region for generations. As a result, they produce a collection of pure and vibrant still wines that have become the standard for Catalan wine.
Their rosé is crafted exclusively from 40-year-old, bush-trained vines of the Trepat variety, grown in calcareous clay soil. The grapes are hand-picked at low sugar levels, carefully sorted, and then gently pressed into stainless steel tanks. Spontaneous fermentation occurs, followed by aging in steel with minimal use of sulfites.
This rosé is characterized by its brightness and fruity notes, complemented by a solid structure. It differs from the light and crisp rosés of southern France, instead offering delightful flavors of fresh strawberries and cherries with a medium-bodied profile. It serves as an excellent choice for enjoying on the terrace and boasts a modest alcohol content of only 11%. Its body is substantial enough to pair well with dinner.
