This wine presents an opaque red color, yet surprises with its balance and full-bodied structure. On the nose, it offers earthy aromas with wild strawberries, cherries, and a touch of spice. The palate is dry, showing some firm tannins with a lively, tangy brightness.
Fento Wines O Estranxeiro 2020

Great value and satisfaction.
Bodegas Maranones Picarana Albillo 2020
Picarana 2021 is the purest expression of Albillo Real, representing the unique environment of the Marañones estate. Natural aeration, the altitude, and the orientation of the plots provide an outstanding balance in the vineyard. The vines are between 30 and 70 years, are trained in goblet form with a creeping growth habit, resulting in very low yields and limited to small clusters. Their respectful approach to growing and making wine showcases the unique qualities of the grape in every bottle.
Artomaña Xarmant Arabako Txakolina 2023
Xarmant is made from sustainably farmed, estate vineyards of indigenous grapes from the Arabako Txakolina DO in the verdant Basque Country, close to the Bay of Biscay on Spain’s rugged Atlantic coast. This proximity to the ocean creates an ideal microclimate, defined by the brisk northerly waters and the humid north-northwest wind, which cool the vines even on the hottest summer afternoons.

Supernova Rosat originates from a plot of 25-year-old, bush-trained mantonegro vines.
Urbina Rioja Gran Reserva Especial 1994
As you might have gathered, I love sharing special bottles. We were out with friends at a Spanish wine tasting, and I thought if the hosts allowed it, I would bring along a special bottle they could try and we could share with our friends. I brought the Urbina Rioja Gran Reserva Especial 1994.

Remelluri Reserva Rioja 2009
A recent visit to San Diego, CA and a lovely dinner at Finca Bottle shop & Tapas bar had a well aged Remelluri on hand.
Gramona Gessami Blanco 2022, Penedes
Great wine shop owners remember their customers and pay attention to their purchases. On this occasion, I sought a recommendation for something new, offering two (take out) food options: Indian and pizza. The shop owner displayed a mix of intrigue and contemplation, as if wondering, “Which wines in will make the grade?” He then confidently perused his wine shelves and selected the Gramona Gessami from Penedès.
Envínate “Lousas” Viñas de Aldea 2018
This wine presented a rich ruby hue, with a nose of red currant and black cherry nuanced by a hint of pepper. Tastes of cherry and a trace of cola emerge, carried in a medium body that gradually reveals its tannins. It was a gorgeous bottle. I’m saving my last bottle for 2025 or 2026.
Luis Anxo Rodriguez Vazquez – A Teixa Blanco Ribeiro 2016
The 2016 A Teixa Blanco unveils an impressive aromatic array, blending notes of pear and a hint of green olive with layers of complex minerality, dried flowers, and a subtle whisper of vanillin oak. On the palate, the wine presents a profound depth, full body, and a plush texture.

Alfredo Arribas, Gotes del Priorat 2019
This was my second consecutive Dry January, and it felt like it lasted longer than a slow-motion replay of grass growing. Despite the sluggish pace, it was surprisingly easy to complete, but not as easy as a summer morning coffee on the porch.
Rioja Gran Reserva Vina Arana La Rioja Alta 2015
A brilliant ruby robe, some warm spice, black raspberry and cherry on the nose, and a hint of coconut and tobabcco. Chewy and full, still young and concentrated. Anise as the wine opens. A lovely oak spice, nice clarity and tannins. Beautiful finish. This wine will get even better with age over the next 10 years.
Commando G La Bruja de Rozas Vino de Pueblo 2020

Very light-bodied and silky smooth on the palate. It finishes with fine tannins, showcasing the deft hands that crafted it. Purchase this and store it for up to 10 years.

Appearing in a light, vibrant yellow hue, this wine offers an enticing aroma characterized by oak, spice, and vanilla notes. It boasts
Partida Creus Muz

Summer Has Officially Left The Building
This past weekend, the calendar rudely reminded me that summer had officially packed its belongings and left the building. However, my quest for honestly crafted, sustainably produced rosé and rosados from independent and artisanal winemakers continues. Because, fellow oenophiles, just because summer has made its exit doesn’t mean we can’t continue to enjoy the results of the Saignée method.
Cantalapiedra Viticultores Lirondo Verdejo 2022 – Castilla Y León
I discovered this producer through an article on where to enjoy wine in Madrid. The article mentioned the 2020 Cantalapiedra La Otea. However, when I contacted my sources, the only wine available from this producer was the Lironda. It took nearly three weeks to arrive, but I was extremely pleased with both the wine and its price. The Cantalapiedras have a lineage spanning several generations […]
Parajes del Valle Macabeo 2021
As this summers rain-soaked sun dips below the horizon and takes its warmth with it, I find myself cozied up with a glass of Parajes del Valle Macabeo – the ultimate rainy summer companion. With each sip, I can almost hear the wine whispering tales of its wild fermentation adventures, like a seasoned backpacker recounting stories from the road less traveled. Just as the mosquitoes […]

Pere Mata L’Ensamblatge Brut Nature Gran Reserva 2012 50% Xarello, 25% Macabeu, 25% Parellada The quality and transparency of these sparkling wines inevitably draw comparisons to Champagne. However, Pere is not trying to replicate Champagne. Aixa Red Vermouth
We all know the names Martini & Rossi and Cinzano, the popularized vermouths used primarily for Martinis and assorted cocktails. However, the Spaniards have taken Vermouth to another level. These tend to come from boutique vermouth specialists or serious winemakers who’ve added vermouth to their lineup. So, what is Vermouth? It is a fortified and aromatized wine that is macerated with a selection of herbs, […]
Diving Deep into La Rioja
Recently, we had the honor of welcoming some truly special visitors, prompting me to delve into my treasured Rioja wine collection. It was an occasion to celebrate both the cherished classics and the exciting new additions. These wines perfectly embodied my philosophy, which centers around enjoying well-crafted, naturally grown wines that are ready to be savored. Each bottle was a delightful experience, and we were […]
Tinto de Verano
From the New York Times June 28, 2023 By:Rebekah Peppler A drink built and named for summer, Spain’s effervescent tinto de verano (summer red wine) matches the season’s easy-going nature. At its most traditional, the recipe sticks to just three ingredients: ice, red wine and citrus soda. (La Casera, from Spain, is most classic, but 7Up and Sprite also work.) This version includes an option […]
Who doesn’t love a magnum…
Baron de Ley Reserva, Rioja 2014 Magnum I wasn’t familiar with this producer initially, but what caught my attention was the combination of price and bottle size. Who doesn’t love a Magnum? It’s perfect for a dinner party, as why open two bottles when one is easier? Baron de Ley is a relatively new producer, established in 1985, boasting an expansive vineyard spanning almost 1500 […]
Elegance and Finesse
Bodegas Breca – Brega 2018 Elegance and finesse are words commonly associated with high-end, expensive French wines such as those from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, and the overly priced Napa Cabernet Sauvignons like Heitz, Stags Leap, and Opus 1. However, in this case, I’m referring to Spanish wine. Spain has been producing incredibly elegant and nuanced wines, utilizing heirloom, native grapes from 100-year-old vines and exceptionally […]
Succes Vinicola Patxanga Rosado 2022
The label on this bottle turned my head, I had to try it and see if the playfulness matched what was inside. I was not let down. Albert Canela and Mariona Vendrell embarked on their winemaking journey in 2011, when they were just twenty years old. Their venture is located in the hills of Conca de Barberà, southwest of Barcelona in Catalonia. With support from […]
Bernabeleva Camino de Navaherreros 2021
I was searching for a Spanish white wine made from the Verdejo grape, similar in style and flavor to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. However, the shop owner didn’t have any in stock but recommended another wine to me, primarily Albilio Real. This grape offers mostly neutral flavors and a light perfume aroma. Just a short distance west of Madrid, you’ll find Bodegas Bernabeleva. Nestled […]

The recent cold snap may have crushed my dreams of warmer days prematurely, but fear not, I believe we are finally crawling our way towards fairer weather and, most importantly, quaffable wines. Yes, my friends, the time has come to rejoice! But before we dive into the delightful world of rosé, let’s take a brief stroll through its captivating […]

The Kingdom of Aragon
Two wines side by side, same vintage, same region, both under $20. But my idea was to introduce a grape variety that produces very fresh, juicy wines – the kind you can bring as a guest to dinner and enjoy thoroughly. Garnacha is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world, with its origin in Spain’s Calatayud region. It ripens […]

They are part of the group that Telmo Rodriguez refers to as the “new generation of Spanish winemakers”, pushing the boundaries […]
Vinos Atlantico

For those of you unfamiliar with the latter, the wines are barrel aged in American Oak and bottled for no less than 10 years. The end result of their 146-year-old process is a wine that maintains the characteristics […]
Mic Drop…Boom!
I couldn’t wait to finally open this bottle! I’ve done my research on it, even listening to a podcast that mentioned it. This is yet another wine by Telmo Rodriguez, as part of his Rioja project. Remelluri has a rich history, tracing back to the 14th century when it was founded by monks. However, records show that winemaking on the estate dates even further back, […]
Bodegas Ponce “La Casilla” Manchuela 2019
I discovered this wine quite by accident last summer. A new wine shop had just opened and one of my favorite things is to peruse a new wine shop. I was impressed with their selection of natural, organic, and biodynamic wines. Many I was already very familiar with. However, I was not impressed with their pricing. I believe I paid $29. for this wine much […]
Gulp Hablo – Orange Organic
I first learned of this wine from Eric Asimov’s New York Times column 20 under $20. In it he says its made by Juan Antonio Ponce, of Bodegas Ponce of which I am familiar from his outstanding Bobal La Casilla. Still, the bottle has no visible references to the grapes or the maker other than “Parra Jimenez”. So I delved a bit further and found […]
The second most common red grape variety in Spain
Remember the name Bobal, a red grape variety that is native to the Utiel-Requena region in Valencia, Spain, which is located on the southeastern Mediterranean coast, is the second most commonly grown grape in Spain. Atance Bobal 2019 is a wine that is 100% Bobal and is produced by Toni Sarrion, the winemaker of Bodegas Mustiguillo. He has taken it upon himself to champion this […]
An Absolute Crowd Pleaser
A few months back we were at an event tasting a number of different wines from various countries and regions. We came away with a handful of new bottles. One of which was the Ladeiras do Xil Godello . I didn’t get a chance to look at the label but once in my possession I saw that the maker was Telmo Rodriguez. For those of […]
