Two years ago at Tanglewood, I had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful people, a California winemaker and her sister, a new resident of the Berkshires. Through this new connection, I was then introduced to a retired principal musician of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It is his wine we tasted this very evening. This serendipitous meeting has set the stage for truly memorable tasting experiences.
Our host presented us with a remarkable lineup consisting of eight vintages of Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, ranging from 1990 to 2013 (’90, ’92, ’03, ’04, ’07, ’08, ’12, and ’13). Standout favorites among them were the ’04 and ’12.
As for the specific flights, the ’13 displayed the most oak influence in the first flight, with American oak being especially noticeable in the ’90 and ’92. This was likely due to these vintages having been crafted by a different winemaker than the other two in the second flight.
Lastly, we were presented with a ninth “mystery” wine: an exceptional 1997 Silver Oak from Napa Valley that was absolutely spot-on in every way. The 1997 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, showed excellent fruit and balance, with a touch of pleasant acidity and hints of herbs. The finish was long, with well-structured tannins—a complex and truly satisfying wine.
However, the true stars of the evening were our gracious host and hostess, whose warmth and hospitality made the evening flawless, enjoyable, and truly memorable.
Salud!
Bobby
