Burgundy and a surprise from Southwest France

Domaine Muret Les Grand Boullions Picpoul de Pinet
Picpoul is an ancient grape variety originating from southwest France. Traditionally used in the production of Cognac and Armagnac until the 20th century, this grape produces wines that are known for their crisp and refreshing qualities.

In the glass, this particular Picpoul presents a straw-yellow color. The enticing aroma of fruit on the nose is carried through onto the palate, where the wine offers a dry, yet lingering taste of strawberry and pear with a hint of citrus. Overall, this wine is a perfect choice for the summer months, offering a refreshing and satisfying experience.

Louis Jadot Chablis Fourchaume premier cru 2018
This wine is both round and supple, and its flavors possess a cool clarity. The wine gets its character from a limestone minerality and is layered with notes of nectarine, tangerine, and orange citrus. While the wine does possess a hint of oak in its structure, this only serves to enhance without being overly flashy. Overall, this wine is a good expression of balance and nuance.

Louis Jadot Cote de Nuits-Village Le Vaucrain 2018
The wine’s earthy and moderately wild nose boasts enticing red currant notes. While the flavors are round and plump, they seem to lack any distinctive terroir qualities that one would expect. However, given that Jadot produces a significant number of wines, it is not entirely surprising. The production of wines in enormous volumes, often tens of thousands of cases at a time or more, can lead to homogeneity and wines that lack distinction and quality. In this particular instance, it appears that the winemaker may have “dialed it in,” resulting in a wine that falls short of its potential especially at this price point.
