2014 Curii Uvas y Vinos Tinto

A delightful ruby hue with a subtle hint of maturity at the rim. The wine offers a gentle sherry aroma and reveals well-defined tannins leading to a lingering finish. Its old-world oak character imparts a unique and intense quality. This vino tinto presents a richly exotic profile, capable of aging gracefully in the bottle for many years. Upon release, it showcases a diverse array of red and dark fruits, alongside herbal and spicy notes, evoking memories of the savory vermouths crafted in this region.

I am intrigued to see how this ages.

2014 Curii Uvas y Vinos Tinto
Curii Uvas y Vinos Tinto label reminiscent of 16th century etching fully wraps the bottle.

Curii Uvas y Vinos represents the personal endeavor of Violeta Gutiérrez de la Vega and her partner, Alberto Redrado, a sommelier from the esteemed l’Escaleta restaurant in Cocentaina, Alicante. The wines undergo fermentation and aging in the Gutiérrez de la Vega family cellar in Parcent. Although the grapes originate within the Alicante appellation, the wines are bottled without its designation. Working with small vineyard plots totaling 1.2 hectares across six parcels, they currently produce around 2,000 bottles annually. Their mission is to revive and rehabilitate old parcels in their native region, crafting wines with minimal intervention—true Mediterranean expressions characterized by lush, contemplative fruit, elevated aromatics, and approachability.

Curii, a 100% Giró varietal, is harvested by hand and foot-trodden as whole clusters in open vats. Fermentation occurs with native yeast, followed by approximately one month of maceration. The juice is then drained (without pressing) into neutral French and Slovenian oak barrels for one year before being transferred to old, large American oak casks for an additional year. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural essence.
