2013 Villa S. Anna Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Poldo

80% Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile and 20% other complementary grapes

I the purchased this wine (as well as others) during our visit to the Villa in 2017. We had the distinct pleasure of having a private wine tasting with the owner, Simona Ruggeri Fabroni arranged for us by my friend Neal Rosenthal. She graciously included two exceptional wines, one being the Poldo, which she referred to as the “talking wine,” a stand alone wine that compliments long after dinner conversations. The other being her incredible Vin Santo, presented right at the conclusion.

The Poldo six years later was still young in the bottle. At first offering tight tannins and bright fruit. The robe on the wine was a glorious ruby red, showing no signs of aging. We drank this without decanting trusting small frequent pours to take us through the airing process. Cherries, sweet herbs, tobacco, cedar spice box, and white smoke rise up from the glass. It presents a cool-toned and elegant profile, featuring the classic Villa S. Anna salty mineral core that sets these wines apart. Masses of tart cherries and raspberry cascade across the palate, with noticeable tannins that don’t hinder the wine’s sensual and almost-sultry character.

This wine is poised to gracefully mature for another decade in the cellar, gaining even more finesse over time. In the realm of real Italian gems, this wine truly shines as one of them.
